Oncology Nurse Patient Educator

Position Highlights:

Nebraska Medicine is seeking an Oncology Nurse Patient Educator to join our Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center team in Omaha, NE. This role focuses on strengthening and coordinating patient and family education across the oncology program to ensure patients receive clear, consistent, and timely information throughout their cancer care journey. The Oncology Nurse Patient Educator develops and delivers evidence-based education that helps patients understand their diagnosis, treatment plans, side effects, and supportive care resources. This role also helps identify opportunities to improve and standardize how patient education is delivered across oncology programs and partners with clinical teams.

Job Duties:

Patient & Family Education - Provide individualized education to oncology patients and families to support understanding of diagnoses, treatment plans, side effects, and symptom management while encouraging self-management strategies across the cancer care continuum.
Patient Education Development - Develop, review, and maintain patient education materials to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with current oncology practices and identify opportunities to strengthen patient education resources across oncology programs.
Standardization of Patient Education- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to improve consistency in how patient education is delivered across clinics and support standardized approaches to ensure patients receive clear and consistent information.
Program Support & Workflow Improvement - Partner with clinical teams to support patient education for specialized oncology services and emerging programs (ex. oncofertility counseling, scalp cooling) and identify opportunities to streamline how patient education is delivered so patients receive the right information at the right time.

Job Duties : Oncology Nurse Patient Educator

Provide education and support people affected by cancer while helping them to better understand and manage their condition. Encourage self-management that promotes the achievement of individualized behavioral and treatment goals that optimize health outcomes in persons with cancer across the health care continuum. Provide educational opportunities to the community about cancer screening and prevention through outreach activities.

Required Qualifications: Oncology Nurse Patient Educator

Minimum of two years clinical experience in Oncology required.
Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) required
Excellent teaching and communication skills (written and verbal) required.
Ability to demonstrate initiative, teamwork and work with minimal direction required.
Public speaking ability required.
Basic knowledge in office computer tools such as Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required, must be from an American Heart Association (AHA) endorsed program (effective for new hires starting January 1, 2023 or later).

Preferred Qualifications: Oncology Nurse Patient Educator

Experience in multiple areas of Oncology (inpatient and ambulatory) preferred.
Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN) or closely related field degree preferred.
Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Nebraska or current compact state license (if applicable). Oncology Nurse Certification (OCN) preferred.
